Pawn Structure Basics

Pawns cannot move backwards, so every pawn move changes the position for good. Isolated, doubled, backward and passed pawns, and the pawn chain, are the vocabulary you need before any strategic plan makes sense.

About this lesson

A knight can go back. A pawn cannot. That one rule makes the pawn structure the part of a position that lasts, which is why strong players name structures the way doctors name conditions. This free lesson gives you the five words you need: isolated, doubled, backward, passed, chain.

What you will learn

  • How to spot each pawn type from the pawns alone, without looking at the pieces.
  • Why the square in front of an isolated or backward pawn is the real weakness.
  • When doubled pawns are a liability and when the file they open pays for them.
  • Where to attack a pawn chain: at its base, with ...c5 against d4 in the French.

The idea, position by position

Five sections, five structures. An isolated d4 pawn with the d5 square highlighted. Doubled black c-pawns on c6 and c5, paid for by a half-open b-file. The Najdorf after 7.Nb3, where d6 is backward and d5 is the hole Black accepts in return for space and the c-file. A lone passed d5 pawn in a pawn ending, with an arrow to d8. And the French chain after 1.e4 e6 2.d4 d5 3.e5 c5, where the arrow from c5 to d4 shows the break against the base.

The club mistake is to see pawns as what they are now rather than what they will be in an ending. An isolated pawn with queens on may be fine; with rooks only it needs a piece glued to it. Before every pawn move, ask what the structure looks like after the trades that follow, and whether a weakness appears that no later move can repair.

How to practise it

The five sections take a few minutes each. The quiz then gives you a three against three pawn ending where one push forces a passed pawn, and an isolated d5 pawn attacked three times and defended twice. Answer with the move, spoken or tapped; the explanation shows the full line. Pawn Breaks is the follow-up.

Questions people ask

Is this lesson suitable for beginners?
Yes. It assumes only that you know how the pieces move. Each term is shown on a board with the pawns highlighted.
What is a backward pawn?
A pawn that stands behind its neighbours and cannot advance without being captured. The square in front of it, which no friendly pawn can cover, is a hole.
Is it free?
Yes. Pawn Structure Basics is one of three free middlegame lessons and has no time limit.
